How large is the City of Riverside Fire Department?
We have approximately 230 sworn personnel operating out of 14 fire stations.
What specialties does the fire department have?
The city has many specialty programs spanning a variety of disciplines. We encourage you to learn more about our specialty programs .
Are all RFD units ALS (Advanced Life Support)?
A detailed answer to provide information about your business, build trust with potential clients, and help convince the visitor that you are a good fit for them.
What does the hiring process consist of?
Candidates will begin with an oral board interview composed of operations personnel. They will then progress to an oral board interview with the Fire Chief. After successfully passing these interviews, a background investigation, including a polygraph, medical exam, and psychological exam will be completed.
What are the requirements to apply for the City of Riverside Fire Department?
- Possession of high school diploma OR equivalent
- Possession of a valid California Department of Motor Vehicles Class C License
- Possession of a valid American Heart Association Health Care Provider OR Red Cross BLS/CPR for Healthcare Professionals Certification
- Possession of a Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (CPAT) certificate valid within six months of application
- Completion of a California State Fire Marshal accredited Fire Academy.

EMTs: Must have one of the following
· A valid California EMT
· A valid California or out-of-state approved EMT course completion and successful NREMT testing completion within the past two years
· A valid out of state EMT license and successful NREMT testing completion within the past two years
Paramedics: Must have one of the following
· A valid California Paramedic license
· A valid California or out-of-state approved Paramedic course completion and successful NREMT testing completion within the past two years
· A valid out of state Paramedic license and successful NREMT testing completion within the past two years.
When is the next time you are hiring? How many positions will you be hiring for?
Application periods open based on current and anticipated vacancies. This number varies from year to year based on retirements and promotions. Typically, an entry-level application period is posted every 1-2 years. Please click here to receive an email when we next post an application.
How long does it take to get hired?
The process varies in time depending on department needs and appointment availability. Typically, the hiring process takes between 9-15 months from date of application.
Does the RFD only hire paramedics?
No, both Paramedics and EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) are hired for the Firefighter position.
Does my score on the FCTC written exam matter?
To apply, a minimum of 70 is required. Human resources may create interview bands based off of the FCTC and other application factors.
Probationary Period | Department Culture & Lifestyle
How long is the probationary period?
The probationary period is 12 months.
What does your probationary period consist of?
Probationary firefighters are expected to learn all facets of our department, with an emphasis on physical fitness and firefighting skills. There are 4 tests throughout the year. At 6 months there is a written test and practical evaluation and then again at 12 months there is an additional written and another practical test. Does your probationary period have a truck rotation?
During your second six months of probation, many truck related firefighting skills are practiced. After completing probation, you will be placed in a certification track to become truck / tiller certified.
Does your department host a fire academy?
The department does not place new hires into a California State Fire Marshal accredited Fire Academy. All newly hired personnel will complete an approximately 2 week mini-academy department specific prior to being placed on a Fire Engine.
Do personnel work out on duty?
- Possession of high school diploma OR equivalent
- Firefighters have a physically demanding job that requires daily strength training and cardio conditioning. Department policy allows for a workout in the mornings and evenings.
- Possession of a valid American Heart Association Health Care Provider OR Red Cross BLS/CPR for Healthcare Professionals Certification
- Possession of a Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (CPAT) certificate valid within six months of application
- Completion of a California State Fire Marshal accredited Fire Academy.

Does the department have wildland engines?
The department has both city-owned brush trucks and OES (Office of Emergency Services) fire engines. These engines are owned by the state and staffed by RFD personnel. We frequently send OES engines on mutual aid requests & strike teams.
What shift schedule does the RFD use?
The RFD uses a modified Kelly schedule consisting of rotating 24-hour shifts. Personnel work alternating days for a week followed by either 4 or 6 days off. The work week is 56 hours.
Are personnel subject to mandatory overtime?
Due to vacancies, strike teams, and sick leave, personnel may sometimes be subjected to mandatory overtime shifts.
Can I be forced to work for a week straight?
The department and union have agreed on a 96 hour rule. Personnel will not be force hired into shifts longer than 96 hours in duration.
Are tattoos allowed?
The department has a policy for tattoos while on duty. Visible tattoos on the arms, not extending past the wrist, are permitted in most circumstances. Tattoos cannot be offensive or discriminatory.

What retirement is offered from the city?
The city participates in CalPERS. Newly hired members that do not have previous CalPERS membership are given a 2.7% @ 57 years formula. For more information, view the Fire Unit rate sheet found here.
Are there any programs for young people interested in the fire service?
For youth between 14-21 years of age, the department offers an explorer program. The program is designed to develop an understanding of the fire service and prepare individuals for a career in public service. For more information, click here.
