Meet the Basic Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid California DMV Class C License
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate a CA State Fire Marshal accredited Fire Academy

*EMT & Paramedic applicants must hold proper certification to apply.

Get on the FCTC Statewide List

Create an FCTC account and place yourself on the Statewide Eligibility List (SEL).

  • Register and complete your candidate profile
  • Upload required documents (IDs, academy, EMS certs)
  • Schedule and take the written exam if required
  • Opt in to cities/departments you want to be visible to

Earn a Valid CPAT

Complete the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) at an approved site.

  • Create/Sign in to your FCTC account
  • Register for CPAT & optional orientation/practice sessions
  • Pass all 8 stations within the time standard
  • Download your CPAT certificate for your application

HAZMAT

City of Riverside Hazardous Materials Team is Type 1 State of California Office of Emergency Services Certified, the highest certification level available. The City of Riverside Fire Department has been Type 1 certified for over 5 years and was the first Type 1 team in the County.

FIRE INVESTIGATIONS

The task force is supervised by the fire department and is a multi-agency organization. It consists of members from the Riverside Fire Department, Riverside Police Department and the Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

URBAN SEARCH & RESCUE

Urban Search and Rescue, US&R, is a “multi-hazard” discipline, that may be needed for a variety of emergencies or disasters, including earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, storms, tornadoes, floods, dam failures, technological accidents, terrorist activities and hazardous materials releases.

SWIFT WATER

City of Riverside Fire Department maintains a Type 1 Water Rescue Team. The Fire Department has 51 Riverside Firefighters trained in swift water and maintains an equipment cache to support this specialized team. To maintain this specialized discipline the department members complete an annual swim test and boat operations training in Blythe, CA.
